Members of Congress at 2009 Rally Print E-mail

We are deeply grateful to all Members of Congress who came to the Rally and spoke on behalf of life.  Their support is invaluable to our cause, particulary in light of the recent elections.  These individuals certainly are not our only advocates on Capitol Hill, but they do deserve a special thanks for joining us at the Rally and offering their inspirational comments.

Following are some exerpts from the speeches they delivered at the Rally.

James Sensenbrenner (R-WI)

I encourage you, I entreat you, and I beg you to be involved in political actions on the part of every pro-life measure that there is, and in opposition to every measure that tends to encourage the doctrine of death…because we can win it, if the people are involved.

Please help me…[and] my colleagues,…and then when we come here next year, we can rest in the satisfaction [that we have retained the gains that we have made over the past 36 years]…and then can work on getting rid of both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and we can restore the law to where it should be.

Mike Pence (R-IN)

Chairman of the House Republican Conference

Thank you for coming to our nation’s capitol.  [Your presence] is an encouragement to the men and women…who stand every day in the well of the House and Senate on behalf of the sanctity of human life.

Let me assure you that the [Members of Congress] who stand with me today, and those who stand for life here in Washington, DC, will continue to stand for the sanctity of life on the floor of the Congress.

Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD)

[Today] is a beautiful day, but for 17 years I’ve seen you come here by the thousands in rain, in sleet, in snow, and in bitter cold.  Please know that you are an inspiration not only to us but to millions of people across America who share your commitment.

Jean Schmidt (R-OH)

Chairwoman of the Congressional Women’s Pro-life Caucus

[We must]…reach out to birth mothers to offer them a helping hand.  I’m going to reintroduce legislation that will give birth mothers the opportunity to recognize the value of their service in choosing life and giving that life into the loving arm of adoption…It will provide a tax credit so that they can carry out their pregnancy, give that baby to a loving arm, and not have to worry about…the costs involved.

Paul Broun (R-GA)

…there are babies being destroyed due to lack of knowledge that life begins at fertilization…we’ve got to educate the people across this nation that life begins at fertilization…I’ve already introduced the Sanctity of Human Life bill this year…a bill that defines life as beginning at fertilization.  We can change America…we can save lives.

Steve King (R-IA)

[The March for Life is] the largest, most sustained demonstration against injustice in the history of America…and we will sustain our march, our prayers, our demonstrations, our debates, our writing, our thinking, and our praying until this injustice is over.

Todd Akin (R-MO)

Scott Garrett (R-NJ)

Scripture tells us, “Oh Lord, who may abide in your tabernacle, who may dwell with you on the hill?  It is he who walks with integrity, he who works with righteousness, and he who speaks the truth.”  I thank you for coming here today and speaking the truth…

[In his inaugural address] the new president said, “We are all equal, we are all free, and we all deserve a chance to pursue that full measure of happiness…”  Mr. President, even the very young, and even the very small…they, too, deserve to pursue that full measure of happiness…

Jim Jordan (R-OH)

Thank you for standing up for the truth…and thank you for doing it in such a positive way…

And always remember the story from Scripture…when the Israelites were camped against the Philistines, and every day the giant would walk out and issue the challenge, “who will fight Goliath?”  The Israelites’ response was, “he’s so big we could never defeat him,” but David’s response was, “He’s so big I can’t miss.”  That is the attitude of pro-life people.

Gregg Harper (R-MS)

We are with you…do not give up.

Proverbs 21:31 says…the horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.

…and with His help, we will win.

Henry Brown (R-SC)

I’m grateful to see such a great group of folks out here today…standing up for what we all believe is right.

I have a 100% pro-life voting record…[but in the last election I was almost defeated by a pro-choice candidate]…Don’t forget to go back home and support the candidate that you want to represent you [in Washington.]

Robert Aderholt (R-AL)

…your presence here makes a big difference…by sending a message to the folks on Capitol Hill—and around the world—that the United States of America does stand for life.

I want to thank you for your patience, and for standing with this issue for so many years…Your voice does not go unheard on Capitol Hill.

 Mary Fallin (R-OK)

I am the Co-Chair of the U.S. Congress Women’s Caucus and I am pro-life.  [E]ighteen years ago I decided I wanted to get involved in politics…[A lobbyist advised me that if I became pregnant, I would have to terminate the pregnancy if I wanted to continue my campaign.  As it turned out, I did become pregnant, so]…I campaigned pregnant,…I delivered [a] gorgeous…boy,…and I chose life.

Phil Roe (R-TN)

I’m an obstetrician-gynecologist…I have delivered almost 5,000 babies, and I strongly support the sanctity of life.

Ultrasound has given us a window to see the…living…child inside of the mother’s womb…I’ve seen human development occur from its earliest stages of life through birth, which strengthens my conviction in the right to life.  Life is a precious miracle from God that begins at conception.

If government has any legitimate function at all, it is to protect the most innocent among us.

Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE)

[O]ur love of country, our love of justice, our love of what is right…brings us here today…to a profound historic moment and opportunity for change.

You young people are the inheritors of the great American tradition of seeking justice…you are the new civil rights movement…you are the voices of the defenseless…and the conscience of a nation that is desperately seeking renewed principles…

David Vitter (R-LA)

I am committed [with the other Members of Congress on stage] to do everything we can to preserve and promote and defend life.

We are going to win this fight, not because of us [politicians], but because of you…because of your faith, and your commitment, and your work…particularly the young people in this wonderful pro-life crowd.

Keep on marching and fighting and working and praying…and we will prevail.

Jack Kingston (R-GA)

…we are going to do everything we can…to cut the funding of Planned Parenthood which is now at $336 million a year.

I want you to follow the President’s…example and be a community activist…and keep on doing what you’re doing…

Bob Latta (R-OH)

We have fought the fight, and we are going to keep fighting the fight, because I know that you are going to help…you need to get out there and tell everybody in the neighborhood, in your town, in your churches…why it is so important to protect life.

Bob Inglis (R-SC)

…the secret weapon of the pro-life movement…[is]…ultrasound…[because] the pictures show a baby.

[It is powerful] in the hands of crisis pregnancy centers…and even more powerful in the hands of grandmothers [who are]…showing pictures of their unborn grandchildren to all of their friends.

[Ultrasound] is changing the way we look at a baby.

Glenn Thompson (R-PA)

I’m proud to be pro-life…proud to represent the people of the 5th District, including the innocent unborn.

…protecting the lives of the unborn should never serve as a political football, but rather a rallying point to celebrate the most precious gift that God has given us, and one that our Founding Fathers placed first, as the most important,…the right to life.

Pete Olson (R-TX)

…the oath I took on the floor of the House of Representatives to defend the Constitution…follows one I took long ago in my heart…to protect the most innocent among us.

This is not a new fight for me, or for you, but we must never, ever waiver in our determination and eagerness to see that justice is eventually done.

Todd Tiahrt (R-KS)

…look into the faces of people up here on stage [representatives of Silent No More]…look into the face of courage…people who are willing to take a stand for the unborn…people who are willing to say that we made a mistake and we’re going to make it better.  [I]t’s that kind of courage, that you all have, that is going to change America.

We have had a step back, in the election of this president, but I’m not discouraged, and I don’t want you to be discouraged, because these people have given me the encouragement that I need to move forward—and that you need to move forward—to  change the face of America.  You’ve made a difference in the past, let’s continue this and make a difference in the future.

Michele Bachman (R-MN)

Each one of us is made in the image and likeness of a holy God…and because of God’s  imprint on each human being, we have value—infinite…, eternal value.  Because of that value, we need to have policies that encourage life [and] uphold life.

Our nation today, to our shame, pays for death.  Why not finance life, through pro-life centers…so that women can make positive [choices] for their children.

Trent Franks (R-TX)

…the reason we built the [Lincoln Memorial]…was because [Lincoln] felt within himself the humanity and the courage to embrace the child of God in a slave that the Supreme Court said was not human…and we need to remind [President Obama] that nothing could make him more different from Abraham Lincoln…than completely ignoring the humanity of the unborn children who die every day in this country…

Chris Smith (R-NJ)

…each of you are an integral part of the greatest human rights struggle on the face of the earth—the right to life movement—a selfless expression of tangible love, compassion, and commitment to protecting women and children from the pain and violence of abortion…Be encouraged, our cause is right…

…President Obama [in his inaugural address] spoke eloquently of what he called God-given promises of freedom, equality and a chance at happiness…[W]ill our new president extend the God-given promise of hope, freedom, justice, respect, compassion and protection, and a simple chance at happiness…to America’s unborn children?

Sam Brownback (R-KS)

We are going to continue this fight.  We may have lost an election, we have not lost the war.  Our cause is too important.  Our cause is too just and right.

We will continue to fight for life, no matter how long it takes, no matter how weary people may get, no matter how many marches we have to do, because life is the right choice.  It is the right choice for America.
